Frequently Asked Questions
What are you doing about covid-19?

Due to covid-19, many families have opted to switch to online classes to maintain social distancing. For these sessions, I typically use Zoom or Google Hangouts, and can send a recurring invitation for us to use each week. If online classes don't work well for you or your child, I'm still happy to do lessons in person. Precautions of your choice can be taken, such as wearing a mask and using hand-sanitizer.

Which books do you teach from?

For new beginners ages 5 - 16, I typically use the Faber "Piano Adventures" series. For adult beginners, I use Alfred's "Adult All in One" book. I look at each student's experience on a case by case basis and decide the appropriate level of material to purchase. If you are an experienced adult student with a set of books you're accustomed to, I'm happy to purchase my own copy and continue working on them together.

Do you come to our home? Do we go to you?

Typically I come to my students' homes as this is more convenient for them.

What is your teaching style?

I would describe myself as a very relaxed teacher. Unless asked to be, I tend not to be strict with students. For very young students, lesson plans are based off of their lesson books. For more advanced students, we typically do a combination of lesson book / material of the student's choice. I believe students have more fun when they can work on music that is exciting to them, so I allow students to select a good amount of their own pieces.

Do you do recitals?

After discussing this topic with many students, I decided not to do recitals. It seems that playing for a large group of strangers is more stressful to kids than it is fun. I still encourage students to have personal showings with close family and friends. Many students have a holiday sing-along towards the end of the year, showing off some of the Christmas songs they have learned.

Do you have a list of policies?
